Severe gum disease can instigate joint replacement infections

For anyone who has had a hip replacement or is a candidate for a hip replacement, Dr. Flower strongly recommends getting a thorough dental examination for the presence of periodontal (tooth and gum) disease. Bacteria from this bone-destroying disease has been identified as a possible cause of infection of joint replacements. This is especially true in the more advanced cases of periodontal disease.

It is estimated that over 80% of the adult population has periodontal disease at some level and that people in the senior population are especially likely to have it at an advanced level. Over a person’s lifetime, periodontal disease progresses slowly, but continuously, to destroy the bone that supports the teeth. Most people experience no discomfort until the bony tooth support is completely lost. Consequently, many adults are unaware that they have any infection until a tooth gets loose or falls out. To avoid the unpleasant surprises caused by this common disease, patients must make regular visits to their dentist.

Candidates for joint replacements who have not been seen by Dr. Flower in over a year should consider a thorough dental evaluation of their teeth and gums before surgery.  Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment of gum infections and tooth abscesses may take from two weeks to two months before the patient is healthy enough to undergo surgery.
